Drooling in a 3yr old?

Our 3yr old son is still drooling quite a bit.  In fact, I think he's drooling more than his 16mo old sister.

I think it's mostly because he seems to like to keep a finger in his mouth (not sucking, just kind of resting it there) and that leads to the drool coming out.  He often has a wet spot on his shirt below his chin.

Is this normal?   I can certainly imagine that he's still drooling because his molars are still coming in, but I haven't seen any of his 3yr old friends drooling quite as much as he does.

An article I read in Parents magazine regarding thumb-sucking suggested giving the child something else to bite on such as a towel, wash cloth or low-pill blanket. Either that or an activity that would occupy his hands, like playing with clay or finger paint. Maybe he frustrated about something.

Just a side question, any chance he's thirsty?

Yeah, that's a good idea.  I think the root cause here is that he's just not fully closing his mouth most of the time.

I don't think that he's usually thirsty, as we often are offerring him drinks and he's refusing.
