Kids and Sports

In the last week, we've been told:

1. Our 5 year old can't play soccer since he's never played before and he'll be way behind the other kids on the team.

2. Since high schools don't have as much money, they've largely cut sports so the only way for kids to play sports is if they are on a team.  By the high school level, the only teams left are travel teams and we can expect them sport to go about 50 weeks of the year and to spend $10,000-$12,000 for travel and other expenses.

We also know a family who is moving so their 4-year old will be closer to the team she plays on.

Ack!  Really?!?!?  I find this sickening.  Are kids sports really so competivtive?  Anything we can do to let our kids participate in a sane way (for enjoyment rather than trying to get them drafted onto a professional team in elementary school).

Whoever told you your 5yo cant play soccer is wrong.  Period.

Especially in soccer, there are different leagues for different levels of competitiveness.  Our kids dont do soccer in particular so this is second hand, but in our area there's AYSO for recreation and CYSO for more competetive play, or something like that.  So, there should be an appropriate leagure for your kid to play in.

Also, come on, they're five.  there's lots of learning time left to go, and alot of developmental steps that have to do with age, not experience.  Not just in physical skills but mental skills.  It's absurd to think that a 5 yo wont 'catch up'.

Our 10 year old didnt start playing baseball until 1st grade, a year behind his peers.  He's doing just fine.  He wont go pro, but he's having fun.

AYSO has chapters all over the US, and they encourage non-competitive play. My daughter started playing at 8 years old, and it was a bit of a challenge since most girls on her team had two or more seasons behind them. But still she enjoyed it, learned, and is looking forward for the next season. AYSO doesn't even start until 5 anyway in my region.

Then again, we are not aiming for the World Cup.

    Who told you that?!?

Okay this is more of a rant than an 'answer'... as we are completing our first (and last) Little League season where all three kiddos are playing t-ball, or softball.

And while it all seems like an easy way for a kid to have fun....

    HELLO? 3 kids times 2 games a week = I know. INSANITY.

And the coaches. Bless their souls. They mean well I KNOW they do. And they are all volunteer and all... BUT. WHAT THE HECK? They each schedule 'extra' practices during the week at any old school ground where they can get in, which is great and all.. but back up to the 3 kids, 2 games per week, per kid...

I can't be in more than one place at one time!! Ahhhh.

Wouldn't it be great if playing the games was just that? PLAYING the games. He's 6, it's T-Ball. The end.
