How do you "ramp down" from having a nanny?

We've had a nanny for the last 3 years, since our first child was born.
As he goes to Kindergarten in a couple of years, it feels like we should be able to have our nanny work less hours, half time, or not at all if we can find a good after-school program for our son.
But, it's also easy to see how we might be "addicted" to having her around and helping out so much with the kids.
How do you go from having a nanny to not having a nanny? Was it hard? How long did it take? How much advance notice did you give your nanny? Did you help her find a new job as well?
