What's the best bit of parenting advice you've received?

I know, we all have stories about the worst, but what about the best?! Is there any you've been moved to pass on?

Don't sweat the small stuff and don't worry about doing everything right.  Have that glass of wine and have faith that you're instincts will get you through.  Parenthood is not as hard as you may think- you're capable!

    nice!

A friend said recently "If that book/article/site's advice doesn't sound right to you, it's not talking about your baby." Which I took as a fabulous way to say "Trust yourself, watch your baby, try different things, really - have faith - it'll all work out. It has for millenia."

That's close to the advice I would give.

You're not doing it wrong, because most of the time there's not just one way to do it. No one knows your kids as well as you do, nor does anyone else have their best interests at heart like you do.

The advice I turn to most is of the "this too shall pass" variety. A co-worker of mine (who is also a pediatrician and dad to 5!) said to me awhile back, "Don't worry, they all do X eventually", where X can be potty-training, or not wetting the bed, or in our case, sleeping through the night. As baby is now 5 months old and still waking 2-3 times a night on a good night, I find myself repeating those words often. The refrain "everyone sleeps through the night eventually" helps keep me sane.

    Ooh, I like that!
