At what age do you teach your children do dial "911"?
Question pretty much says it all, but I'm also wondering:
Do you think teaching your kids to dial 911 is important? We're considering getting rid of our land line and only having our personal cell phones. That would mean that even at a relatively old age (say, 8 years old) our kids wouldn't have any ability to do something like dial 911.
Do you think having a land line is important when you have kids?

As of last year, we no longer have a land line. They both do know about 911 already, although I haven't taught them how to use my cell phone to dial it yet. It's mostly so they can tell someone with a cell phone to call 911.
Note that even if you stop paying for a landline, you could steal keep a phone connected just for 911, the one thing that works without service (supposedly). We don't even do that, though.

Dialing 911. Thats easy enough, but what about the description/location of the emergency? By the time the phone call is traced it might be too late...... I'd think that between 5-8 yrs kids could be trained to give specific information. However, everyone is frightened in an emergency--and if their parents are involved, the kids might be unable to function in that scenario-- but being able to dial 911 is the quickest way to get help. Whatever phone can dial into 911 is better than nothing.

We are keeping our landline just for 911 service. My husband travels quite a bit and our kids are young enough that I don't want them to have to figure out how to use a cell phone or describe where we are. I taught our oldest how to call it when he was 2. We practiced on a phone that was not plugged in. I told him I would be very very angry if he called it not for an emergency, and he never has (and neither has our now 4-year old). We also went over what was an emergency. "If Mommy falls and can't get up, is that an emergency?" Yes. "If the tv is broken, is that an emergency?" No. "If you see a cat run over by a car, is that an emergency?" No. "If you see a person run over by a car, is that an emergency?" Yes.

It is important for young children to be taught on how to handle an emergency situation. This might help them to keep safe and saved another person’s life. I have been working with my 5 year old son basic steps on how to handle an emergency situation, and I taught him the importance of dialing the emergency number. In fact, I recently registered to a safety program were in, he could easily access to emergency response services. It has a one-click emergency alert that could notify me, my friends, and family when my child is in trouble. For one-click emergency help, you can check this out http://safekidzone.com/
