Good big story books for a 3-year-old?

While kids love to read picture books, we want to start having more of a choice for longer read-out-loud stories, with lots of stories/chapters in one book. The two books we currently have are Winnie-the-Pooh and Eloise.

Especially with the holidays coming up, we're looking for book recommendations...

Some books we think might work:

Pippi Longstocking (and some of the other Astrid Lindgren books)

Wind in the Willows

What else??

I don't remember this, but according to my Dad, I LOVED "Alice in Wonderland" and he had to read it many many many times.

The Poppleton books by Cynthia Rylant are the first chapter books that I've read w/ my daughter (3.5 yr old).  They are short, cute and still have picture.  The one we've read is only three chapters long.  She loves it, and there is a whole series of them - Yay!  Basically they are three short picture books with the same characters in one book, if that makes sense.  I don't my daughter is ready for chapter books where the story builds with each chapter.

Also, check out The Read Aloud Handbook for great lists of books, categorized and described.  Excellent resource!!

We love the Frog and Toad books. They are not chapters exactly, but usually have many stories in the same book. And they might be themed (seasons, friendship, etc.)

At that age, our son loved the "Fly Guy" series. They are really silly and don't make much sense to me. But they were recommended by our librarian as good books to learn reading (through repetition of simple words). These actually have chapters dividing 1 story in the same book. When we read them, he made sure we said the chapters, "Chapter 1".
