Children's books about facts of life

0 votes

I'm looking for a book for my three year-old that gives the basic facts of life (or as much that is apprproriate for his age). He keeps asking me how the baby is going to come out and I'm unsure how much detail to share. Also, I'd be interested to know if anyone has a favorite book about beocming a big brother/sister.

Topics:

Whatever my parents did to me that would have made me terrified of a "birds and the bees" discussion with them, I apparently didn't do with my son because he has no qualms about asking me the most direct questions (many of which, he is too young for)...I wish I had a solution for this!

Personally, I liked Tomie de Paula's book Baby Sister, I found it sweetly representing a big brother's experience looking forward to a new sister. The artwork is lovely and detailed, it is almost a story in it's own right beyond the "here's what you to expect, kid" bits.

As to how the baby is going to come out... I'm afraid I don't know a good book. If it helps, the advice I got when my son was asking was to answer very generally, leave it at that, and see if another question follows, answer a bit more specifically and repeat. That said, I had more or less dodged the question a couple of times and then was lucky enough to have my mom in the car when it came up again. I said, "Mom, how would you explain it?" She said something to the effect of - "When the baby's ready, the baby comes out a hole." That seems to have sufficed for now - I'll let you know if we get follow-ups!

    By the way, congrats momofQ!

I just came across this blog post on Becoming Sarah (becomingsarah.com). It describes a conversation with the blogger's 2 year old daughter and uses the words "uterus", "sperm" etc. Quite impressive.

Even though he was much younger than the kid in the book, my son also loved this Dear Baby book. He even made his sister a best baby award like in the book. It covers a whole year of the baby's life.

Ok, this book is not about getting a new baby. It's about getting a new bear. But I think it's perfect. My son, the big brother, loves this book. And he gets that his little sister is a lot like that bear. This was perfect for when she started getting old enough to get into his things.

I recently saw this book getting funded on kickstarter. It says it's a book about babies for every kind of family.
