What's the best way to teach my 5yr old about speed & distance?
My 5yr old seems really, really interested in the concepts of speed and distance.
Almost every time we get in the car, we have a conversation like this:
kid: "How fast are we going?"
dad: "About 65 miles per hour."
kid: "How fast is that?"
dad: "Well, if we went this speed for one hour, we would travel 65 miles."
kid: "How long is 65 miles?"
etc.
We've been having this conversation for months now, and it doesn't seem to really have any relevancy for him.
What are some good ways that I could help him understand the concepts of speed and distance?
I can remember speeding down my block as fast as I could peddle while my Father drove along side in our car to see how fast I could ride -- but I was alot older than age 5 as I was probably about 12 at the time.

Maybe you could time the speed of his ( and your ) bike riding in a large empty parking lot ? That would be a fun way to measure speed and distance with faster and slower times...... its just a thought !
