What's a great gift for a 1 year old?

We recently went to a birthday party for a 1-year-old boy and I realized I hadn't a clue what to get him. I vaguely remembered that pull-toys (fun for new walkers) were a hit with my son, but couldn't remember what else might be age appropriate. At the store, it seemed like most of the toys (especially the fun looking toys for boys) were labeled 3+ (usually for no apparent reason).

Any suggestions / memories of great toys for those just turning 1? Both for boys and girls?

    The CD's:

They Might Be Giants "Here come the ABC's"... They Might Be Giants "Here come the 123's"... They Might be Giants "Here comes Science"...

Kids music that's actually good music on it's own, independent of being kids music.

I agree w/ the idea of good music, but I think 1 is still a bit young for They Might Be Giants, etc. It's not simple enough for a 1 -yr. old. Shorter and more repetitive tunes work better at this age.

Some other toy suggestions would be stacking toys, sorting toys, color/shape toys. Melissa & Doug and Plan Toys have a bunch of great colorful wooden toys that are wonderful for this age.

I tried to avoid toys with flashing lights and music for my daughter, but we did have a few that were given as presents, and she really enjoyed some of them. One in particular was a Leap Frog table that she could hold onto while learning to stand/walk, and it's lights/sounds were very cause&effect oriented.

My son just turned 1 and his best gifts were toys that made music with the touch of a button (add something on the toy that moves to the music and you've really got a winner) or trucks that he can cover with his whole hand and steer around the floor.

Second runner up - Little People products.  The farm and Noah's ark are also getting a lot of playtime attention.
