By the way, I had asked this question last year on another forum and here is the summary of the responses I received:
Garbagemen:
- $50 each
- “Never met the garbagemen and wouldn’t know how to give them a bonus...doesn’t seem right to leave it out with the garbage.”
- Baked treats
- $10 each and cookies
- cash
Mailman:
- “I think the mailman is not supposed to take tips, but I know some people give him cash – I’ve heard $50. I try to give him cookies or something”
- Baked treats
- bottle of wine
- gift or cash
Housekeeper:
- See’s candy
- Equivalent of one cleaning service
- $50-$100
- 50% of her daily rate
- cash in amount equal or greater than one service
Nanny:
- “We give our two regular babysitters and housekeep $50-$100 bonuses, usually $100. We give them a small gift as well.”
- cash, in amount equal or greater than one week pay
Newspaper guys:
- $10 each
Hairdresser:
- 50% of a typical cut
Well I tried to fix the formatting, but it still doesn't look right. anyways, I'm with you. I've never tipped the garbage or mail man. Though I remember when I was young my parents did.

I have an add-on question to this - cash or a gift card?

Wow, this is totally insane. I've never tipped a Garbage man or mailman in my life, and I hope I'm not alone!
