When's the right time to buy a baby shoes and how do you figure out size?

My son is pulling himself up and starting to do a little bit of cruising, as long as there's another surface or knee to hold onto nearby. I've gotten recommendations from this list to either keep him barefoot or find socks with traction for indoor play. When should I consider getting him shoes? Also, even with slippers, how do I figure out his size? He wears 6-9 month clothes. Thanks!

We really love the Robeez shoes for when baby is outside. They're made of soft leather and don't restrict or mold the feet in anyway. Once your child is more adept at walking and starting to negotiate stairs and more varied surfaces (hills, dirt, etc), then we moved on to more constructed shoes like Stride Rite.

Great! Are Robeez found everywhere or does one store carry them?

Robeez are in some stores (their website should tell you where...I know BuyBuyBaby has them if they are in your area), and other stores carry knock-offs that are just as good. That style of shoe is great for early walkers!

My 10mo daughter is wearing these which I purchased from Amazon.com for decent price. Be aware that their sizing is on the larger size. E.g. my daughter is still wearing 0-6mo size.

+1 for Robeez (or similar). I think the sizes are fairly straightforward - e.g. 6-12 months. Our daughter is just now starting to walk, and while Robeez would still be fine, we found a pair of semi-structured shoes, still very flexible but with a stiffer sole at our local Stride Rite. They go on easy, give some support, but don't seem like they constrain her foot movement / development. (The link is not exactly what we got, but it's close.)
