How to keep holiday gift giving under control?

It's holiday time, and family members are wanting to give presents to the little ones. How do we manage the fine balance between the fun of giving gifts and not going overboard? As the kids get older, we don't want holidays to become a want-fest.

In my extended family, we go off of gift lists and we've gotten into the habit of adding donations to our gift lists. So, people tend to give a donation on behalf of someone plus a small item. It makes us feel good and keeps us from getting overloaded with "stuff".

Not sure if this would work, but how about asking several family members to buy a single (maybe bigger) gift together? Or ask them to put money on a bank account that you have for your children instead of buying a gift?
