Setting up a college fund

How do you set up a college fund? What do you look for? How much are you allowed to contribute? How little? I'm feeling the need to start saving, but don't even know where to start.

I set one up with Fidelity when my daughter was just a few weeks old. They allow you to contribute as little as $50 a month, and it's invested based on the age of the child. Since my daughter is so young, they can invest it more aggressively now, and more conservatively when she gets closer to 18. I think the maximum you can contribute is in the 100s of thousands.
