Kindergarten hours vs. work hours

1 votes

My oldest is 4 and we're expecting him to start kindergarten next year. My wife and I both work. Kindergarten's hours are not very long, and the after-school programs seem to have deep waiting lists. So how do working parents care for their kids after kindergarten? Work really weird hours? Hire a part-time nanny or baby-sitter? Find private after school programs. I'm in Mt. View. Looking for advice and recommendations and what has worked for other parents. Thanks!

This question recently came up on another parents list that I subscribe to, so I'll briefly summarize what some of them said.

One suggested getting an EduCare AuPair.

Another parent has their kids in Huff Elementary in Mountain View, and mentioned that they sent their kids to the YMCA after school program that's onsite.

This same parent also mentioned Peninsula Day Care which has transportation to and from their facility.

Another parent said their kid goes to Bowman International School and that they have on-site activities for kids lasting until 6pm.

Another parent mentioned Twisters and said that they have transportation to and from their facility, afterschool homework help, etc.
