How young to start Martial Arts classes?

I think Martial Arts are a great thing for young kids to take, in that it teaches them discipline, self defense, and also gives them a way to release their energy around hitting and kicking things, but in a safe environment.

What's the youngest age that you would recommend sending a child to martial arts?  I think I've seen kids as young as 4 years old at the Martial Arts studio near our house, but I wonder if they're getting anything out of it at that age.  Thoughts?

We'll probably enroll our youngest daugher in Kung-Fu when she is around 4, to join her older siblings. They get to do fun exercise and practice balance and flexibility. That seems good enough for a four-year old.

Unless she really wants to do gymnastics...
