Air travel with family of 4. Seat booking?

0 votes

It's still early for us, as our youngest one can go on our laps.  However, once she turns 2, what is the best way to book airline seats?

Get a row of 3 seats and then another one across the aisle?

Get two sets of 2 seats?

I would book 2 and 2 (window and aisle, leaving middle empty) and hope for the best. The people in the middle seats are always happy to trade and if it works out hopefully one or both of you end up with a whole row.

I also book towards the back of the plane as the middle seats up front seem to fill faster than the middle seats in the back.

The aisle and window booking worked out on all legs the last time my wife took a solo trip with our daughter, the one time someone was in the middle, the flight attendant took it upon herself to reseat the guy and give my wife the whole row.

I have had similar experience as Carl.

One other thing is to check in early online for traveling with a lap baby. They ask when you check in if you are traveling with an infant. If the flight is not too full, some airlines (I know Alaska does) will block the seat next to you.

I'm more concerned when both kids require seats.  They'll be 2 and 4 yrs old respectively.  So, should we divide and conquer (2 seats + 2 seats) and each parent take one kid?  Or try to keep all 4 of us together with 3 seats and the other across the aisle?

Or, as Carl suggested, do 2 + 2 but shoot for aisle + window in both cases and hope we get 6 seats??  That would be a windfall, especially if they were directly across or in front of each other.
