Mattress recommendation?

Looking for crib mattress recommendations; leaning toward Naturepedic, but curious if there are good organic alternatives (or is "organic" overrated?).  Or within the Naturepedic series, which did you get?

Our first crib mattress was purchased at BabiesRUs, and it had all the labels you could imagine about organic cotton goodness you could possibly wish for. But when we opened the wrapper, we discovered it was covered in a vinyl or vinyl-like waterproof layer, which really stank up the place, so we returned it. Volatile organic compounds! Jeez!

After a while of research and studying options, we went for a mattress with a polyethylene waterproofing and I think it was the Naturepedic cheapest seamless design mattress. We ordered it online, but they were facing high demand at the time, so it took a while for us to get it.

I have no real data on how organic cotton compares to regular. To me it seems more a planet health issue than a child health issue. But we cared a lot about what kind of sealing material was used for waterproofing the insides of the mattress. Food grade polyethylene is good, as far as we know. There is some question about what material is used to create fire retarding quality, and I believe these use borate, which is among the better options. (as we know, babies are notorious for smoking in bed!!!)

A friend made a custom mattress with organic foam (latex maybe?) she bought in a store... I believe it was at House of Foam in Palo Alto. She said it was a lot less expensive than buying an organic mattress.

We got a Moonlight Slumber mattress (purchased it at Lullaby Lane in San Bruno, CA).  Their website claims "All of our products are PVC/Vinyl free, non-toxic, antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, and made of the best combination of earth friendly products and health and safety features."

Check out sleepdesign.com. Reasonably priced crib mattress "organic"  oeko-tex standard 100 certification, no FR's, no off-gassing to worry about, but you need to use a waterproof protector pad, no vinyl $300's
