At what age was your child able to recite a simple book from memory?

Our 2.75 year old is now able to recite several short board books from memory, with no assistance!  We're so proud!

(The books he can recite are Saffy by Paola Opal and Moo, Baa, La La La by Sandra Boynton

At what age were your kids able to do the same?  Is this in-line for the typical development of a nearly 3-year old?

I don't remember the age that my kids memorized short books, poems, songs, ditties --- but I know they did at a very early age. And how do I know this?  I myself can still recite the first few lines and portions of several songs, and poems --- this after 35 year or so!  How does this happen? With repetitive reading... How can the kids not remember a short book if they ask to have it read to them literally hundreds of times -- the words get embedded in a parents brain for life too--- whereas, the kid promptly forgets it after several years and goes on to learn more new things ! :-)

I think that being able to do this at 2.75 is pretty early.  Maybe it is because we tend to read a book for a few days and then move on to another one, but our 3.75 year old is just starting to be able to recite books.  I remember when my sister, who is several years younger than me, started reciting books at about age 4.  So it looks like you've got a smart one on your hands.

Maya (2.75 yrs old also) did this the other night with "The Owl and The Pussycat" to my great surprise. I turned the pages and she recited it almost word for word (We've ony had the book about a week). I think it helped a little that I read it in sing-song. She can do this with a few other books like "My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs"

The Owl and the Pussycat.... ahhhh yes!  Thats one of the classics my kids could recite at a young age and to which I ( as Grammy) can still recite ( parts of)  lo these many years later !

I don't want to make you feel bad but just to throw it in there, our son could recognize books we recited before he was one and was himself reciting short books by age 2.

At 2.5 he was reciting longer books, like The Giving Tree. Now at 3 he can sound out/read simple words.
